ESWM (Educational and Sustainable Waste Management) is a transformative initiative that is turning Lebanon’s waste crisis into an opportunity. Through education, innovative technologies, and community-driven action, we are building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Lebanon for future generations.
The ESWM Project, co-financed by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the Polish Aid 2022 framework, aims to foster sustainability, empowerment, and economic growth through a circular economy model. By uniting communities, creating green jobs, and promoting eco-friendly waste management practices, we are collectively building a greener future.
Building a Sustainable Future for Lebanon
At ESWM, our mission is clear: to create a sustainable Lebanon by turning waste into opportunity, empowering communities, and fostering a circular economy. Our goal is to reduce waste, preserve resources, and empower local communities to lead Lebanon toward a greener, cleaner, and more resilient future.
We are committed to:
Behavioral change is at the heart of the ESWM Project. By raising awareness and educating Lebanese communities, we are encouraging them to sort waste and embrace recycling, creating a foundation for a circular economy.
ESWM is not just about education; it’s about creating real, sustainable solutions. We’ve established an eco-friendly infrastructure in Halat, linking waste sorting, collection, and recycling to solar-powered technologies.
The ESWM Project empowers local communities and youth, creating potential job opportunities and skills development. Over 60 youth have been trained in waste management, recycling, and sustainability practices, becoming the leaders of Lebanon’s green future.
NO POVERTY: By creating job opportunities and providing economic empowerment, especially for youth in underserved communities, the project contributes to reducing poverty and economic inequality.
QUALITY EDUCATION: The project fosters environmental education through awareness campaigns and training programs, empowering local communities with essential knowledge and skills in waste management and sustainability practices.
Affordable and Clean Energy: By integrating solar-powered systems throughout its operations - from collection boats and transportation trucks to sorting facilities - the project demonstrates sustainable energy solutions in waste management while reducing operational costs and fostering energy independence in local communities.
DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: Through capacity-building and creating green jobs, E_SWM promotes sustainable economic growth, providing communities with the skills to participate in green economies and run sustainable waste management systems.
SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES: By implementing eco-friendly waste management solutions and recycling initiatives, the project helps make Lebanon’s cities more sustainable, creating cleaner, safer, and resilient urban spaces.
RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION: Focusing on waste reduction, recycling, and the circular economy, the project promotes sustainable consumption patterns and efficient resource use in local communities.
CLIMATE ACTION: E_SWM contributes to climate change mitigation by improving waste management, reducing methane emissions from landfills, and minimizing the carbon footprint of waste disposal systems.
LIFE ON LAND: By preventing land pollution and protecting biodiversity, the project ensures that Lebanon’s ecosystems remain healthy, helping to preserve natural resources for future generations.
PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS: The project exemplifies the power of partnerships, uniting local communities, NGOs, and international stakeholders like the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to achieve the SDGs through collaboration, shared knowledge, and mutual support.
70+ educational events have reached thousands of Lebanese, promoting waste segregation and recycling.
60+ youth trained in sustainability, leadership, and waste management.
14 waste collection points have been set up across the country, making recycling more accessible to local communities.
A solar-powered sorting facility in Halat is processing recyclables and turning waste into resources.
